Welcome to the Northern Colchester BID website

A feasibility study was conducted at the end of 2019 to gauge the interest of, and seek feedback from, the Northern Colchester business community regarding a Business Improvement District (BID). The process indicated an appetite for businesses to work together to find solutions to common issues and therefore seed funding was sought to start the formal BID process.

The Steering Group, formed of Northern Colchester businesses across a mix of sectors, believe a BID will enhance Severalls Business Park and its surrounding areas to be a place where people want to work and relax by improving and providing solutions to shared concerns and issues, and providing a sense of community.

We are currently in the planning and consultation stage, which means all Northern Colchester businesses are being asked for further feedback.

We urge everyone to get involved with the consultation process; a BID reflects the views and needs of the businesses within the BID area and it is important to share your views and get involved.

Come to events, complete the survey – make your views known.

WHAT IS A BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (BID)?

A BID is a business-led partnership that enables coordinated investment in the management of a defined area. The BID will provide sustainable, consistent investment for Northern Colchester and its businesses. Businesses decide and direct what they want for the area by having a voice on issues affecting the area. A BID charge (known as a levy) is ring-fenced for use only in the BID area – unlike business rates which are paid into, and redistributed, by the Government. It brings additionality of services, not replacement ones.

Local businesses would be in total control of a future BID which would represent all sectors, promoting collaborative working with others to achieve greater things. The benefits of BIDs cited by the businesses they represent are wide-ranging and include:

  • Improved staff retention
  • Area promotion
  • Facilitated networking opportunities with neighbouring businesses
  • Assistance in dealing with the Council, Police and other public bodies
  • And more…

ENGAGING WITH YOU

A consultation is being conducted to ensure any potential BID and its associated business plan reflects the needs and requirements of businesses. Business are being consulted about a potential BID through questionnaires, face to face meetings and events.

Please join in and share your views:

  • Complete a ‘Have Your Say’ survey
  • Attend a workshop
  • Join us at a networking event

All the feedback received will be collated and analysed, and will shape whether or not a BID moves to the next stage as well as what a potential BID may look like from the agreed area, possible activities and more.
